Call for Proposals: Ofrenda Altar Installation

Wednesday, August 27 - Monday September 29 2014

The Detroit Institute of Arts is inviting artists to submit proposals to create ofrendas for display in the museum from Oct. 24 to Nov. 2. An ofrenda (offering) is a collection of objects placed on an altar during the annual Mexican Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. An ofrenda is usually created for a person who has died and is intended to welcome him or her to the altar setting. The altars are traditionally decorated with ornate sugar skulls, flowers, favorite foods, mementos and pictures of the deceased. Contemporary ofrendas have been created as a way to pay homage to not only people but also places, moments in time, ideas and events that people feel are worth commemorating.

Proposals are due by end of day Monday, Sept. 29, and artists who are selected will be contacted by Monday, Oct. 6. Participating artists will receive a small stipend as well as payment for materials.
