(Turkey/2016—directed by Ceyda Torun)

Though some have referred to this enchanting and visually wondrous Turkish film as “the ultimate cat video,” Kedi is not a documentary about housecats or the strays you see in your backyard. Kedi, rather, is a film about the hundreds of thousands of cats that have roamed through Istanbul freely for centuries, gliding in and out of people’s lives, impacting them in ways only an animal that straddles the worlds of the wild and the tamed possibly can. Istanbul’s cats bring joy and often purpose to those they choose, giving residents an opportunity to reflect on life and their place in it. Describing her film, director Torun writes, “Cats are as integral to the identity of Istanbul as its monuments, the Bosporus, tea, raki and fish restaurants.” A gem. In Turkish with English subtitles. (79 minutes)

“A splendidly graceful and quietly magical documentary about the feline population of Istanbul. Profoundly affecting – Kedi will make you a believer.” –Joe Leydon, Variety
