  • For Everyone

On October 5th, 6th and 7th, Boston’s world renowned Alloy Orchestra – which Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Roger Ebert has called “the best in the world at accompanying silent films” – will pay a return visit to the Detroit Film Theatre.

(Russia/1924—directed by Grigori Kozintzev and Leonid Trauberg)
Boston’s famed Alloy Orchestra returns to the DFT with one of their most extraordinary discoveries in years. Nikolai Gogol’s classic 1842 story The Overcoat (Shinel) is the basis for this extraordinary 1924 film adaptation, which will play at the DFT immediately following its American premiere at the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center. The legendary actor Andrei Kotrichkin stars Akaky Akakievich, as an impoverished clerk in St. Petersburg who finds his entire existence suddenly centered around the acquisition of a new overcoat to replace his hopelessly tattered one. Remade many times over the years, this legendary version from co-directors Grigori Kozintzev (best known for his later adaptations of Hamlet and King Lear) and Leonid Trauberg (The New Babylon), long thought to be lost, features an innovative, stylized design scheme and memorable photography. Presented with the Alloy’s new score, a lost classic comes to vibrant life. (85 min.)
Tonight's performance is free with museum admission.
