Wednesday, April 25, 2012

Alan Wallach
Professor of Art History, The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA
Thomas Cole is often celebrated as the “founder” of American landscape painting. Yet, he aspired to paint ambitious historical and allegorical subjects, which were out of step with the parochial tastes of 19thcentury American collectors. Alan Wallach will discuss Cole’s lifelong struggle to adapt English aesthetic traditions to the taste of his American audience.
