Don’t miss this final opportunity to see Camille Claudel and Rodin: Fateful Encounter before it closes. Detroit is the only U.S. venue for this exhibition exploring the work of Auguste Rodin and Camille Claude, two sculptors whose artistic and personal lives were intimately entwined. The final weekend, Februay 3, 4, and 5, conincides with the Super Bowl, and the exhibition offers a pleasant respite from all the football.
The sixty-two works by Claudel and fifty-eight by Rodin trace the careers of both artists, from before they met to after the dissolution of their relationship, with an emphasis on the initially happy years, then stormy ones they spent together. Among Claudel’s key works in the exhibition are Sakuntala, The Waltz, La Petite Châtelain, The Age of Maturity, The Wave, and Vertumnus and Pomona. Rodin is represented by his Bust of Camille Claudel, Saint John the Baptist Preaching, Balzac, and The Gates of Hell, the work from which The Thinker emerged. Many of these works have never been exhibited in this country.
