In conjunction with the DIA special exhibit Monet to Dalí: Modern Masters from the Cleveland Museum of Art, the DFT will present five programs of films by directors who were contemporaries of the 20th century artists represented in this collection. Several of Auguste Rodin’s pieces included in the exhibition are sculptures included in his larger set of work The Gates of Hell. Inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, the entire collection contains 180 figures, many of which were cast independently by Rodin. The Divine Comedy exists as the starting point for an early Italian horror film,The Inferno. As Dante Alighieri (Salvatore Papa) descends further and further into the nine circles, the film's imagery becomes more and more horrific. The film reflects the fascination with the underworld and the burgeoning interest in psychology that would shape both film and art in the coming years. The Inferno will be accompanied by a live piano score performed by David Drazin. (68 min.)
