Detroit Film Theatre: Bigger & Better!

Fans of the Detroit Institute of Arts’ (DIA) renowned Detroit Film Theatre (DFT) now have a reason to enjoy it even more. The DFT recently replaced its 30-year-old screen with a new state-of-the-art, high gain screen. Forty percent larger, it will greatly enhance viewing of the variety of films presented.

“The DFT’s new, larger screen provides a significantly more enveloping experience for the viewer by creating dramatically enhanced sightlines in every part of the theater, including the balcony,” said Elliot Wilhelm, DFT curator.

The first presentation with the new equipment was the June 11th showing of “The Complete Metropolis,” a fitting introduction since the additional screen height allows silent and other vintage film formats to be projected in an image that towers 25 feet over the stage. The new image now fills the theater’s ornate proscenium frame perfectly. It completes the filmgoer’s experience of the auditorium’s stunning architectural design and restores visual impact to the showing of classic films, as well as new, high-definition digital releases.

The screen was generously funded by the DIA’s Founders Junior Council, a group of young professionals dedicated to introducing a younger audience to the DIA and promoting their lifelong involvement with the museum. “We are thrilled about the new screen and delighted to support one of the DIA’s most exceptional programs. Community outreach plays a large role in what we do as an auxiliary,” stated Nicole Wagner, FJC president.
