(USA/2006) directed by Henriette Mantel & Stephen Skrovan
The long and remarkable career of pioneering consumer advocate Ralph Nader is the subject of this fascinating new documentary portrait, which takes us all the way from the cultural, social and economic impact of his groundbreaking 1965 exposé of Detroit’s auto industry, Unsafe At Any Speed, through the recent Presidential campaigns that have, for many, stripped Nader of his status as an iconic hero, causing him to be cast instead in the role of ego-driven “spoiler.” Nader’s amazingly far-reaching influence on this generation is examined, as are the motivations behind his recent candidacies; the result is a multi-dimensional picture of a driven, complex and perhaps even tragic figure, whose personal life remains indistinguishable from his work.
