Welcome to the 2008 Detroit Film Theatre
Welcome to the Fall 2008 Season! The DFT is pleased to offer a program of five matinees this fall to coincide with the DIA exhibit Monet to Dali: Modern Masters from the Cleveland Museum of Art (October 12, 2008 through January 18, 2009). Whether it was Salvador Dali's partnership with Surrealist filmmaker Luis Buñuel or a fascination with industrialization and psychoanalysis, these films both echo and expand upon the major themes of the exhibit. From the infamous to the rarely seen, the program reflects some of the most important currents in film, and highlights the magnificent evolution in the first fifty years of the medium. The films, running on Sundays from October 19 through the end of the season, promise to shock and delight, as unforgettably as the marquee names in the exhibition.
The Alloy Orchestra On the weekend of October 24th, 25th and 26th, Boston's world renowned, innovative Alloy Orchestra - which critic Roger Ebert has called "the best in the world at accompanying silent films" - will pay a return visit to the Detroit Film Theatre with one of the most exciting weekends of classics they've ever presented here. Two restored masterworks by the great director Josef von Sternberg-The Last Command (1928) and Underworld (1927)-will be screened, as will the extraordinary 1927 adventure Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness from the creators of King Kong. To celebrate the Halloween holiday, they'll also perform with a screening of the 1922 Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror by the great F.W. Murnau.
