THE HUMAN CONDITION

Sunday, November 09, 2008

(Japan/1959-1961/Directed by Masaki Kobayashi)

The rarely seen magnum opus of Masaki Kobayashi (Kwaidan, Samurai Rebellion) is a dramatically riveting, incomparably ambitious portrait of the brutalities of World War II and their effect on soldiers as well as Japanese society. The story of a well-meaning labor boss (Tatsuya Nakadai) who tries against all odds to apply humane methods to his grueling military service, The Human Condition was filmed in three parts over three years with a total running time of nearly ten hours. The chance to experience new 35mm prints of this legendary Venice Film Festival prizewinner, presented in a single, marathon, one-day-only screening, is likely to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for movie lovers. Presented with two intermissions, including a one-hour dinner break. (587 min. total)

“Amazingly powerful. This monumental film can enrich your understanding of what it is to be alive.”        -A.O. Scott, The New York Times
