THROW DOWN YOUR HEART

November 13, 15 & 21, 2009

(USA – 2008 – directed by Sascha Paladino)

A distilled dose of pure musical and cinematic pleasure, Throw Down Your Heart follows American banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck on a journey to Africa to not only record a new album, but also to explore the little-known African roots of the banjo. Using the voice of his beloved instrument, Fleck transcends traditional barriers of both language and culture as he forges connections with musicians and music lovers in Uganda, Tanzania, Gambia and Mali. This is one of those rare documentaries in which form and substance fuse into a lyrical, often joyous experience, taking us not only to new geographical destinations, but also to those deeply rooted places in the human heart which ultimately unite us all. Throw Down Your Heart is a simple, satisfying treat. Audience Award, 2008 SXSW Film Festival.  (97 min.)

“Part road trip, part music lesson, it’s a well-made, entertaining journey.” -Reyhan Harmanci, San Francisco Chronicle
