THE CANADIAN SCENE: IT'S NOT ME, I SWEAR!

November 6 - November 7, 2009

(Canada – 2008 – directed by Philippe Falardeau)

In late 1960s Quebec, ten-year-old Léon (a stunning performance by young Antoine L’Ecuyer) responds to his parents’ horrendous marriage in what are at first unsurprising ways – vandalism, breaking and entering, running away from home. But as the consequences of Léon’s “acting out” become more shocking and outrageous, something unexpected happens: the film’s humane and deeply rooted sense of humor begins to surface, and along with it appears a charming and entertaining portrait of both childhood vulnerability and an intelligent young person’s instinct for survival. A smash at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, It’s Not Me, I Swear! (C’est pas moi, je le jure!) is a wonderfully satisfying cinematic rarity in the tradition of Small Change and My Life As a Dog – a witty, emotionally rich and sophisticated film about a young person, made not only without condescension but with an adult audience in mind. In French with English subtitles. (108 min.)

“The most entertaining Canadian movie this year.” -Jason Anderson, Eye Weekly
