Teacher Comments:

Page Middle School has a very diverse population of students from over 20 nations on five continents, representing 25 different languages and 10 major religions. This lesson allowed us to recognize and share that diversity. Students had a chance to learn about themselves and their family history, as well as to learn more about each other. It also allowed them to understand the various cultures of which America is made.

Art is an elective class for 8th graders at Page. Even with two full-time art teachers at our school, not every student who wants art can take it. These social studies students were really excited about their trip to the DIA and the mosaic they created. They liked being able to express themselves and who they are through art.

I love to work with other teachers. To teach this project over 7 days sometimes the social studies teacher and I switched classes, and sometimes other colleagues taught my art students. For other projects I sometimes have to teach during my planning period.

Tips:
I initially wanted to use paint samples (available free from stores). In the end I decided on using construction paper, but I am looking forward to doing this lesson again using the paint samples. It will give students a wider range of colors to choose from.
Also, I had a student who is adopted. She wanted to focus on being an American and how it is important to her, which worked out well.

Student Comments:

"This made me feel happy to have the things I have."
