Students really enjoyed this assignment, and I learned so much about them. When students needed extra help in creating symbols that matched their thoughts and ideas I would go through the brainstorming exercise individually and we would discuss their background and possible symbols. Many times these brainstorming exercises turned in to group (table) discussions. During one conversation a student was discussing her Thanksgiving dinner. I asked her what kind of food was served and she said, "You know - the normal stuff: macaroni and cheese, chicken, mashed potatoes and butter. You know - the normal stuff!" A student across the table replied, "You mean you don't eat turkey and stuffing?!" These comments then lead to a discussion on different cultures and the term ‘normal’.
