| Assessments:
Interviews: students were assessed by teacher observation and participation in classroom discussion. Their biographies, based on the person they interviewed, were graded with the use of a writing rubric available on line at teach-nology.com:
http://teach-nology.com/cgi-bin/writing.cgi
I used a checklist to determine which students developed interview questions, those who interviewed an adult, those who completed the biography, and those who were able to gather information and symbols from their culture.
Quilt project: Students were asked to meet criteria outlined in this rubric from teach-nology.com: http://teach-nology.com/cgi-bin/project_rub.cgi
The students’ quilt squares demonstrated their own identity, heritage and stories through visual symbols. The in-class presentations gave the student the opportunity to share their culture with others and show the importance of ordinary individuals in society.
