Preydynastic Egypt
During this 2000-year span, the inhabitants of the Nile valley completed the change from the life of nomadic hunters and food gatherers to a settled agricultural culture. Toward the end of this time, the carving of ivory and stone vessels, pottery making, and other crafts became highly developed. Writing began to evolve and the basic outlines of the Egyptian system of government began to emerge. The beginnings of a system of religious belief can be seen in representations though to depict some of the deities. In the Early Dynastic Period (3000-2650 B.C.), the country was united by strong rulers from the south who exercised a divine right to rule. These kings may have been considered incarnations of the gods, particularly the god Horus, who was considered the image of divine kingship. |
