Vocabulary List

Collagraph
A form of printmaking that begins with applying objects to the printmaking plate.

Printmaking
Making a copy of an image.

Plate
The original image to be copied.

Assemble
To use a step by step procedure to put something together.

Abstraction
An abstract artwork is usually based on identifiable subjects, but the artist leaves out details, simplifies or rearranges visual elements.

Emotion
A feeling that may be conveyed in artwork. (ie. happy, sad, angry, afraid)

Impression
Any mark or imprint made by pressure. In printmaking, a print results from an inked surface making contact with a paper surface.

Inference
A distinct idea or message that the artist communicates to the viewer.

Rubbing
A technique for creating a print where the image is rubbed with pencil or crayon with a layer of paper between them.

Template
A shape that may be traced to produce multiple copies.

Texture
The implied surface characteristics (rough, smooth, pebbly)

Movement
A way of combining visual elements to produce the illusion of action or to cause the viewers eye to sweep over the work in a definite manner.

Juxtaposition
Positioning shapes or colors next to each other to create an optical illusion.

Print
A copy of original design.

Monoprint
A print made from an original plate in which no other copies can be pulled.

Calligraphy
The art of beautiful writing.

Relief
The surface of the raised printing plate.

Brayer
Roller applicator used to apply ink to the plate.
