The Roeper School is an independent school for gifted students pre-K through 12. The Middle School and Upper School are located in Birmingham, Michigan. The school was founded in 1941 by George and Annemarie Roeper.
The lesson was based on the school's eighth grade social studies curriculum, which studies world cultures, focusing in large measure on political, cultural, and social events of the 20th century. This project was created in conjunction with the school's art and art history teacher, Pat Lawrence. Students were given the option to respond in writing to either a 20th century theme or to the art project, Seeing and Believing, to complete this assignment. This activity was used as an end-of-the-year final project, but I intend to use it as an introductory unit project for future classes.
