Visitor Guidelines for Student Groups
Chaperones
- The museum requires 1 adult chaperone for every 10 students,
including high school. A minimum of 2 chaperones is required for
all student groups.
- Chaperones must remain with students and actively supervise
students at all times.
- Large groups should divide into smaller groups when in museum
galleries.
- Chaperones must read and follow all guidelines.
Visitor Belongings
- All purses, backpacks, bags and briefcases must be inspected
by a security officer.
- Coats, umbrellas and large bags must be checked at the coatroom.
- To avoid delays, do not bring items described above into
the museum.
Museum Behavior
- Please do not touch.
- Please remain at least 18 inches away from works of art.
- Also do not touch frames, pedestals, cases, platforms or
walls.
- Self-guided groups must allow docent-led groups first access
to works of art.
- Please keep your voices low so as not to disturb others.
- Do not run in the museum.
- Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the building.
- Things to touch and use: Interactive computers; labels with
pages that flip; books in reading areas.
Eating in the Museum
- Food, drink, gum and candy are not allowed in the museum
galleries.
- Student Lunch Area for bag lunches is available on a limited basis
with Wednesday, Thursday or Friday guided tours only. Limit 60 students. Advance reservation required;
call Student Tours at 313.833.7981.
- Food may be purchased in the CaféDIA. Hours, W-Fr. 11:30-2:30.
- Large groups must make advance arrangements; call 313.833.1345.
- Suggestions for outside eating locations are available at
the Information Desk.
Photographing and Sketching in the Galleries
- Camera and sketching permits are available at the Information
Desk. Rules are printed on the permit.
- Photography is not allowed in any special exhibition area.Please
note: If your group is not following these guidelines, a museum guard
may ask you to leave the building.

Note: We have limited availability in the student lunch area for bag lunches for
students taking a docent tour Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Advance reservations are
required, call 313.833.7978.
In good weather, groups are welcome to eat bag lunches on museum grounds using bench
seating and the trash receptacles provided.
Pre-Arranged Students Lunches
Lunches for student groups may be arranged in advanced by calling
313.833.1925 or emailing: lphilippo@dia.org.
Lunch options available:
- Hot dog, bag of chips, two cookies and a beverage ($5.49/person)
- One slice of pizza, two cookies and a beverage ($5.49/person)
Student lunches are available at 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. only.
