Other Information

Catalogue
The accompanying catalogue to Gerard ter Borch is the first English-language publication on the artist and was written by Dr. Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr., curator of Northern Baroque painting at the National Gallery of Art. Presenting a selection of some of the most outstanding works from each area of the artist’s career, the catalogue features 80 full-color and 80 black-and-white illustrations as well as essays by noted experts on Dutch art. The Gerard ter Borch catalogue is available in the Museum Shop in both soft cover ($35) and hard cover editions ($55).

Brochure
A free brochure is available for Gerard ter Borch with a brief history of his life and an exploration of the influence that his work had on Dutch art. The brochure incorporates color photographs of his exquisite genre scenes and portraits, including the work titled Lady at Her Toilette from the DIA collection.

Touch Station
Gerard Ter Borch was renowned for his ability to paint luxurious fabrics. Our touch station allows you to not only learn about his techniques for creating shimmering satin, rich fur and realistic skin tones but to simultaneously touch some of the textiles incorporated in his paintings.

Other DIA Dutch Paintings on View
As a result of the current building renovations, much of the museum’s holdings, including Dutch paintings, are in storage. In the final gallery of Gerard ter Borch, a small selection of works by Ter Borch’s contemporaries from the DIA’s permanent collection are on view.

Two of the paintings shown here, Willem van Meiris’s The Holy Family and Saint John the Baptist and Philips Wouwerman’s Soldiers Carousing with a Woman before a Tent are new acquisitions. In the latter, the trumpeter, horses, and soldier form a direct link to the subject matter of many of Ter Borch’s paintings. The other works in this gallery are fine examples of landscape, portraiture, and religious painting. The entire Dutch collection is presented in full in the recently published catalogue Masters of Dutch Painting: The Detroit Institute of Arts, available for purchase in the museum shop ($70).
