John R. Entrance Architectural Rending. Visitors will be able to enter the Detroit Film Theater from this beautiful loggia off of John R. Street.

Detroit dignitaries and museum supporters break ground for the new museum in April of 2001.

The exterior is prepared for the new marble that will better match the central museum building designed by architect Paul Cret.

Construction takes place on the DIA’s new 3-story (plus full basement), 31,000 square-foot expansion with the original Paul Cret building in the background.

Scaffolding takes up the entire Prentis Court area during construction.

Van Gogh is nowhere to be found while the European gallery is under construction here.

Much of the DIA’s spectacular collection is being stored in the new 3-story (plus full basement), 31,000 square-foot addition shown here. By completing the addition first the DIA was able to save money on storing art elsewhere during renovation.

CaféDIA was completed in 2003 as one of the first milestones in the DIA’s renovation and expansion project. The café is now open with a variety of food options as the museum continues to operate with a full menu of exhibitions, programs and events during construction.
