Note: While it is known that our painting was at one point in a Bavarian private collection, it is not absolutely clear that our painting was in the Martinengo (private) coll. in Würzburg, as the Frankfurt painting once was. Although it was communicated to A. Derstine in Fall 2005 that our painting was indeed in that collection, by T. Kossatz of the Martin von Wagner Museum of the University, Würzburg, he based this on information in note 15 of an essay by C. Syre in 1996 (see pub. refs.); there Syre is referring in fact to the Frankfurt painting, not the DIA painting, as having been in the Martinengo coll.; her reference to Sack 1910, p. 188, as having been the first to recognize the painting as by Giandomenico also relates to the Frankfurt, not DIA, painting. That the Frankfurt painting was once in the Martinengo coll. was also mentioned by G. Knox, 1980 (see pub. refs.).
