The Bulletin of the Detroit Institute of Arts, in print since 1919, is devoted to new research on the works of art in the museum's permanent collection.
Bulletin articles are generally twelve to fifteen double-spaced pages in length, not including notes, and include approximately ten illustrations. We will provide photographs of all works in our collection and black-and-white photographs of collateral material. We request that authors provide photocopies and a list of comparative illustrations upon submission of manuscripts. All submitted manuscripts are reviewed by the publications department and the appropriate curatorial department prior to acceptance for publication. We offer an honorarium, payable upon return of approved galleys to this office. Authors also receive five complimentary copies of the Bulletin and the opportunity to purchase more at a reduced rate.
In addition to art historians, readers of the Bulletin include museum members and others with a general interest in the Detroit Institute of Arts and its collections. Objects should be treated in their larger cultural or historical context, and all technical terms thoroughly defined. The publications department uses The Chicago Manual of Style (15th ed.) and Webster's Third New International Dictionary as standard reference guides.
The article's text, notes, and captions should be submitted in both electronic form and hard copy to:
