The Freedman
1863
This artist chose a classic Greek pose to depict the physical and symbolic strength of a man newly freed from slavery. This resonates with me because it shows strength instead of the stereotypical weakness or lack of intelligence of men who were enslaved.
Zephyr Dancing with Flora
1870
This is gorgeous! The artist sculpted the marble so skillfully that you can practically feel the breeze on your face as you see her dress flutter in the wind.
Detroit Industry, North Wall
1932-1933
I like the feeling of awe when you walk from the Great Hall into Rivera Court. It really makes me pause and say (in a whispering, take your breath away voice) “wow”.
