MICHIGAN HERITAGE GUARDIAN AWARD

Presented for:

Outstanding Achievement in the Protection and Preservation
of Michigan's Cultural and Humanities Resources

The MACCH presents this award to an organization or group, or to an individual for making an outstanding contribution toward the protection and preservation of Michigan's cultural heritage.

The winning achievements, work, or projects may involve archival materials, records, objects, historic and archaeological sites and landscapes, and artifacts of every day life held privately or publicly or collected by libraries, archives and museums.

Eligible projects and achievements may include:

Advocacy of the preservation of cultural resources through the political process, working with professional organizations, or with communities

Conservation of endangered objects or documents, including works of art, scientific or archaeological collections, historic sites, historic objects, photographs, etc.

Public education efforts to promote cultural heritage conservation, provide training in techniques or procedures, and/or raise public awareness of the value of protecting Michigan's cultural resources

Research resulting in advances in methods and techniques for conservation of materials

Other activities or programs that advance the protection and preservation of Michigan's cultural heritage.

Activities that are not eligible:

Normal, routine activities of an individual or organization

Projects and achievements that involve cultural heritage of states exclusive of Michigan, or that took place outside Michigan

Projects or achievements that involve collections compiled for profit

Current board members of the MACCH are not eligible for the award.

Awards will not be made to the institutions or organizations that employ currently serving Award Committee members.

The focus of the MACCH award is on human history and culture, so preservation of natural features and habitats are not eligible.

Anyone may submit a nomination.

Nominations for 2004 should be postmarked by January 31, 2004. Nominees should meet the following criteria:

  • The nominee is being recognized for projects or achievements that have been completed, rather than proposed or in process.
  • The work involved collections, sites or objects important to Michigan's cultural heritage.
  • The nominee is a Michigan resident, group or organization, or the work took place in Michigan.
  • The work or achievement being recognized either meets the highest professional standards for conservation efforts, or involved volunteer efforts outside the nominee's usual professional responsibilities.

Nominations should include:

Name, mailing address, e-mail and phone number of the nominee. If the nominee is an organization or group, the name of the organization's current director or president, and one other contact person should be listed.

Description of the project(s) and achievements that merit the award (limited to two pages).

References

Resumes of key personnel

Name and contact information for the person submitting the nomination

Supporting documentation, such as brochures, press releases, reports, photographs, etc. (optional)
