Outreach Activities

  • Web-based curricula using the Rivera murals, Egyptian art and the African Art collections for lesson plans in art, mathematics, language arts, and social studies, and cultural diversity. 

  • Programs with community Social Services agencies such as Alternatives for Girls, Southwest Community Mental Health, Wellness Being, Neighborhood Services, and others, that include museum visits, hands-on art making experiences, and other services as determined and developed with each organization.

  • Sign language interpretation is regularly offered at lectures and other public programs; schools and other agencies serving the hearing impaired community are informed of this service. 

  • Collaborates with the Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency to provide county-wide broadcast to schools. The Detroit Institute of Arts participates in a regional cultural education task force with the Regional Educational Service Agency and thirteen other cultural institutions in Southeastern Michigan. Closed circuit television offerings are broadcast to schools in Wayne County through the local public television station.

  • Teacher workshops focused on incorporating the museum collections and special exhibition topics into core-curricula, as well as a week-long Summer Institute artist-in-residence program for art teachers taught by a visiting artist of national or international stature.

  • Art Discovery Program provides a cutting edge, multiple-contact curriculum for 4th and 5th grade classes in four Detroit Schools. 

  • A collaboration with the Anti-Defamation League includes a museum visit as a component in a multi-session diversity workshop in the Southfield Public schools.
