Volunteer Award Winner:
Volunteer Membership Committee - 2001
Marie Smith became a volunteer at The Detroit Institute of Arts to help an organization she truly admired and to fulfill a personal need to learn more about art. She maintains that she has achieved much more than that working with other volunteers whom she finds to be among the nicest people in the world. Marie has been an active member of the Volunteer Membership Committee at the DIA for seven years. During this time, she has served on nearly all VM board positions and is currently serving as the co-chairman.
A Detroit native, Marie chose her professional career at a very early age while working at her family's pharmacy. The Kaminski Pharmacy, founded by her father in 1909, was located at the corner of Farnsworth and McDougall and continued at the same location for 55 years. Marie received her degree from Wayne State University. She is a pharmacist and works part-time in a pharmacy servicing nursing homes.
Her hobbies include travel, theater, reading and volunteering. She served as president of Soroptimist International of Grosse Pointe, was a former member of Christ Child Society and is a member of several professional and church organizations.
Marie's foremost priority and happiness is time spent with her husband, their children and grandchildren.
