Art to the Schools - 2005

Frances Tobias Higbie is the 2005-2006 Volunteer of the Year for Art to the Schools, a group of docents who take the museum into third through sixth grade classrooms throughout metropolitan Detroit. She has served the committee for 14 years, as chairman and in other positions.

Frances’ parents were members of the DIA and she first became involved when the Junior League of Detroit initiated the program. When she retired from her position at Market Opinion Research, she returned to Art to the Schools.

Frances was born in Detroit, attended Berkley schools, and graduated from Kingswood High School. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from DePauw University with a major in Political Science and Economics. Peter, her husband, four children, and six grandchildren comprise her family.

Volunteering is what our Volunteer of the Year likes to do best. In addition to her work with the DIA, she is involved with The League of Women Voters, and gives walking tours for Preservation Wayne, the Grosse Pointe Garden Center, and the Conservatory at Belle Isle.

When asked what she likes about volunteering, she replied, “It’s fun! I enjoy people very much—new friends, new activities and new interests.”
