E. Delorise Smith became a Gallery Service volunteer for the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) nine years ago, after retirement. She formerly worked as director and teacher in the Detroit Public School Headstart Program at Carsten Elementary School. Smith was proud to be voted the best Headstart teacher by the Detroit Board of Education in 1997. She was director and pianist for Second Baptist Church's nursery school program in Detroit for more than 30 years. She is currently a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Association and the Community Planning Council at the University of Michigan. Smith's many accomplishments include earning bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education, and an Educational Specialist Certification in community planning. She is currently working toward a PhD. Smith's favorite activities include serving as a Gallery Service volunteer at the DIA, walking, aerobics, and yoga. She also enjoys calling and sending cards to people who are ill.Support the DIA
