DIA Volunteer at Rivera Court
Volunteer Award Winner:
Volunteer to Volunteer - July 2008Shirley Brooks began volunteering at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) as a Staff Aide 11 years ago. She served as the committee's vice chair for a period of that time.
Nine years ago Brooks joined the Gallery Services Committee, and you can find her in the galleries most Friday mornings.
She loves meeting visitors, especially the children. She enjoys pointing out special details for them to look for in the museum art collection, such as animals.
Brooks worked many years for a major airline and still enjoys traveling. During her excursions she learned about a variety of paintings and artists. This interest naturally extended to the DIA when she became a volunteer.
She also enjoys working part-time at the Finnish Cultural Center where she honors her ethnic roots with friends.
