The Director, Education Programs leads the museum’s services to pre-K through 12 schools at a time of program growth.  The Director, Education Programs incorporates K-12 educational expertise into the culture of a major art museum. The Director, Education Programs has deep knowledge of pre-K through 12 education issues and practices, and a vision for how an art museum can best work with schools to meet educational goals in the region. The Director, Education Programs leads a team that creates engaging and relevant student field trips, online resources that teachers can use to integrate art in a cross-disciplinary curriculum, and conducts meaningful, relevant teacher professional development partnerships and events. The DIA is required to provide these services to schools in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties as a condition of a tri-county millage which provides operating support to the museum.  The Director, Education Programs provides outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills and cultivates strong ties between the DIA and the local education community. The Director, Education Programs also directs lifelong learning programs delivered by the DIA’s interpretive volunteers, including public tours, family engagements, gallery programs, and community talks about art for general and special audiences. The Director, Education Programs works closely with the Executive Director of Learning & Audience Engagement, as well as the Senior Vice President of Public and Community Affairs, to develop overall vision and strategy for the DIA’s educational program.


  • Ensure that DIA resources are used in the most effective way possible to address the requirements of the DIA’s tri-county service agreements and the needs of pre-K through 12 schools in the region.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director of Learning and Audience Engagement, develop short- and long-term plans for addressing the tri-county service agreements and the needs of area schools.
  • Lead and inspire a diverse team of museum educators and volunteers in the development and delivery of K-12 programs that align with strategic goals.
  • Direct staff responsible for developing adult learning programs delivered by volunteers; direct staff responsible for recruiting and training for volunteers.
  • Direct staff responsible for school communications and work with the DIA Marketing staff on school marketing materials.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key education stakeholders in the tri-county region.
  • Represent the DIA at speaking engagements throughout the community and at professional conferences.
  • Develop and maintain budgets for education programs.


  • MA in education or a related field, doctoral degree preferred.
  • 7 years experience working in an administrative role in a K-12 educational setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of progressive practices and critical issues in K-12 contemporary education.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a diverse team and work collaboratively with colleagues and community stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of art, its interdisciplinary connections, and applicability to the Common Core and Michigan State Standards
  • Demonstrated commitment to program evaluation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, and an ability to work productively with people of different backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Intellectual curiosity about art and the role museums play in communities.
