GENERAL SUMMARY

The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of gifts from individuals and corporations for membership, operating gifts, sponsorships, matching gifts, planned gifts or other support (restricted or unrestricted). These activities may be performed independently, as support for senior Development and Administrative staff, or to assist board volunteers and solicitors.  Performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Solicit gifts from individuals and corporations, including the management of the cultivation and solicitation of 100-150 donors and 100-150 donor prospects assigned to this position to meet or exceed the goal of $1,000,000 in cash each fiscal year
  • Assist in developing cultivation and solicitation strategies for a donor or group of donors that align to museum and department priorities
  • Work independently or in cooperation with the grants manager, prepare solicitation or proposal documents for prospective donors (individuals, corporations or foundations)
  • Prepare all special correspondence for the portfolio of donors and donor prospects managed by this position
  • Ensure that appropriate recognition, fulfillment and stewardship obligations and expectations are met for gifts negotiated or solicited
  • Design, develop and implement individual written cultivation and solicitation plans for each donor and donor prospect within the portfolio of donors and donor prospects managed by this position
  • As determined in regular consultation with the Vice President, Development, complete a reasonable number of contacts (by phone, letter, e-mail or in-person) with current donors and prospects to sustain and nurture relationships 
  • Assist with the maintenance of the moves management module of Raiser’s Edge through the input of contact, strategy and proposal data for the portfolio of donors and donor prospects managed by this position
  • Assist in the training, solicitation activity, results, rewards and recognition for volunteers
  • Prepare and monitor program budgets to achieve revenue goals while not exceeding expense budgets
  • Work with internal or external designers and printers to produce brochures, signage or other materials as needed
  • Participate as a part of the Development team in a collegial fashion
  • Maintain good relationships with all those who help facilitate the effective conduct of this position
  • Carry out such other activities as may be assigned by the Vice President, Development

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Three (3) or more years of previous experience with the direct face to face solicitation of donors at the $25,000 and up level
  • Familiarity with the concepts and benefits of planned giving
  • The ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form
  • The ability to relate to and build meaningful relationships within a diverse population of current, potential donors, board members and volunteers
  • Sensitivity to donor relations management
  • Proficiency in the Raiser’s Edge fundraising software program
  • The ability to work on a team
  • The ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and are comfortable working with computer databases
  • Familiarity with the museum environment
  • Hands-on experience in capital campaigns
