About the Artwork
Designed for the drinking of wine, this shape was extremely popular in Etruria and was exported to areas around the Mediterranean in the late seventh and sixth centuries BCE. The cup was probably a copy in clay of a more expensive metal vessel, the highly polished black surface a fair imitation of metallic sheen. Etruscan graves have yielded hundreds of kantharoi, along with many other ceramic vessels intended for eating and drinking, as part of funeral feasts or as tomb offerings.
