The Inside Dirt on the “Ashcan School”

John Sloan, Robert Henri, Georg Luks, and other realist artists who came to be thought of as members of an “Ashcan School” were both praised and derided for often focusing their attention on the crowded streets and impoverished people of early twentieth-century New York. Heather Coyle, chief curator at the Delaware Art Museum, will explore the social concerns motivating these artists by sharing highlights from her museum’s unrivaled collection of Ashcan School drawings, prints, photographs, diaries, and letters.
