AAW Live! Virtual Talk with Thayer Tolles
Ethereal females appear in many of Augustus Saint-Gaudens most important sculptures. Sometimes as angels or goddesses, often as allegorical figures. One of the last and greatest of Saint-Gaudens’ female figures is Amor Caritas (1880-98), a high-relief winged angel in bronze acquired by the DIA in 1915.
Thayer Tolles, curator of American sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will discuss the ways in which Saint-Gaudens’ treatment of the female figure evolved over the course of his career, with a particular focus on the many women, including paid models and his wife, who inspired him.
