Angels Are Made of Light

(USA/Denmark/Norway/2018—directed by James Longley)

This moving and visually magnificent new documentary from James Longley, the Oscar® nominated director of Iraq in Fragments, traces the lives of several young students and their teachers at the Daqiqi Balkhi School in the old city of Kabul.

Longley takes the time to observe classes in session, and allows students and instructors to narrate their own stories – their memories of an earlier era and above all their hopes for the future – as we observe for ourselves, through new and archival footage, the realities of everyday Afghan life in the wake of seemingly endless strife, disruption and ongoing national turbulence. In Dari, Pashto, Arabic and English with English subtitles. (117 min.)

“A sweeping, profoundly passionate group portrait of Afghan students and teachers. It seizes upon Afghanistan’s most important resource: relentless, radiant hope.” -Thom Powers, Toronto International Film Festival
