In Between (Bar Bahar)

(Israel/France/2016—directed by Maysaloun Hamoud)

Lalia, Salma, and Nur share an apartment in the heart of Tel Aviv. Lalia, a lawyer with a wicked wit, burns off her stress in the underground club scene. Salma is a DJ and bartender. Nur (Shaden Kanboura) is a younger, religious Muslim girl who studies at the university. Nur is intrigued and intimidated by her sophisticated roommates, but when her conservative fiancé visits, his reaction leaves all three women shaken. In her remarkable debut, director Maysaloun Hamoud brings three Palestinian-Israeli women to vibrant life as they attempt the daunting balance of tradition and modernity, citizenship and culture, fealty and freedom. In Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles. (96 min.)

“What makes this spiky dramedy so compelling are the Palestinian-Israeli protagonists, whose split lives have rarely been depicted on screen.” –Alissa Simon, Variety
