Black History Month: Conversations on X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X
In the spring of 2022, the Michigan Opera Theatre will present an opera based on the astonishing life of one of the most misunderstood men in history. X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X is a distinctly American opera by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and pianist Anthony Davis (Central Park Five) with lyrics by the writer Thulani Davis. Their creation is a moving exploration of how one man’s fight to define life on his own terms became a cry for justice of an entire people.
For this special program, Anthony Davis and Thulani Davis will appear live to explore the collaboration that led to the 1986 premiere of the work by the New York City Opera and perform selections from the score with company members from the new production. (60 min.)
