Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story
(USA/2017—directed by Alexandra Dean)
Starlet. Siren. The Most Beautiful Woman in the World. These are some of the phrases used to describe legendary Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr, and now Alexandra Dean’s illuminating documentary adds the title of Inventor – and perhaps even Genius – to the list. Known for her stunning beauty and electric screen presence, Lamarr’s worldwide legion of fans never realized that her intelligence was her most awe-inspiring quality. An Austrian Jewish émigré who acted by day and designed mechanical inventions by night, Lamarr devised a pioneering “secret communication system” to help the Allies defeat the Nazis in World War II – a technological breakthrough which ultimately became the basis for today’s secure WiFi and GPS. By way of archival recordings discovered in 2016, Lamarr’s own voice reveals her struggle to convince the Navy of her invention’s importance, and guides us through the unexpected directions of her astonishing life.
