Creatures: Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)

Scientists discover an astonishing prehistoric creature – a “gill-man” – deep in the wilds of the Amazon. The creature resists with deadly force when his captors try to bring him to “civilization,” yet he’s strangely unable to resist his attraction to scientific assistant Julia Adams.

Creatures is part of a summer-long series of family-friendly sci-fi films, presented free throughout the summer, coinciding with the exhibition Star Wars™ and the Power of Costume. Some of these are movies that George Lucas has cited as being his favorites, others are examples of the vast variety of pre-Star Wars fantasy, science fiction and adventure that fired the imaginations of young audiences in the 1950s and earlier. Raised on the infinite possibilities of movies, this was a generation ready to embrace Lucas’s vision. Each feature film will be preceded by one chapter from the three original Flash Gordon serials of the 1930s.
