(Ukraine/2020—directed by Valentyn Vasyanovych)
Ukraine’s official submission to the 2021 Academy Awards® is a mind-bending, post-apocalyptic drama destined to take its place as a modern science-fiction classic. Filmmaker Valentyn Vasyanovych has envisioned Eastern Ukraine after victory in a war with Russia in 2025 as a desert unsuitable for human habitation, where truck transports of freshwater are the most priceless commodity.
On the border, Sergiy – a former soldier having trouble adapting to his new reality – meets Katya, who’s on a perilous humanitarian mission dedicated to exhuming the past. Together they try to return to some sort of normal life, even daring to resurrect an era in which falling in love was a normal human endeavor.
Horizons Award for Best Picture, Venice Film Festival; Jury Prize, Tokyo Film Festival; Best Feature Film Award, Denver International Film Festival. In Ukrainian and English with English subtitles. An interview with the writer-director is included. (106 minutes)
“An electrifying post-apocalyptic vision with one of the most jaw-dropping images of the year. Absolutely deserving of the biggest canvas possible — it’s a world you want to live in.” – Ryan Lattanzio, Indiewire
“Masterful! Dazzling, strange, tragic, comic, touching and eventually optimistic.” – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times
