(Italy/1954—directed by Federico Fellini)
Giulietta Masina is directed by her husband, the legendary Federico Fellini, as Gelsomina in La Strada, the film that launched them both to international stardom. Gelsomina is sold by her mother into the employ of Zampanò (Anthony Quinn), a brutal strongman in a traveling circus. When Zampanò encounters an old rival in highwire artist the Fool (Richard Basehart), his fury is provoked to its breaking point.
With La Strada, Fellini left behind the familiar signposts of Italian neorealism for a poetic fable of love and dependence, evoking brilliant performances and winning the hearts of audiences and critics worldwide. Winner of the first Academy Award® for Best Foreign Language Film and featuring one of the greatest musical scores of Nino Rota (The Godfather), this glorious 4K restoration of one of Fellini’s key masterworks is made available through the efforts of Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, Bologna. In Italian with English subtitles. (108 minutes)
“La Strada has defied time. One of the indelible foreign films of the 1950s.” —Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
