DFT @ Home | Małni: Towards the Ocean, Towards the Shore
(USA/2020—directed by Sky Hopinka)
A poetic debut feature circling the origin of the death myth from the Chinookan people in the Pacific Northwest, Małni: Towards the Ocean, Towards the Shore follows two people as they explore their surrounding nature, the spirit world, and something much deeper that resides inside them. At the center are Sweetwater Sahme and Jordan Mercier, who take separate paths contemplating their afterlife, rebirth, and death.
Posing probing questions about humanity’s place on Earth – and other worlds – Sky Hopinka’s dreamlike and immensely elegant tale, spoken mostly in the Chinuk Wawa language, signals a departure from the traditional Chinookan people’s often-told myths that will have audiences thinking (and dreaming) about it long after. In English and Chinook Wawa with subtitles. (82 minutes)
“Critic’s Pick! An essential portrait of contemporary Indigenous life that refreshingly centers the Native perspective, beckoning audiences onto its wavelength by tapping into something more intuitive, the stuff of dreams.” -Beatrice Loayza, The New York Times
