DFT @ Home | The Painter and the Thief
(Norway/2019—directed by Benjamin Ree)
Desperate for answers about the theft of her two of her massive paintings from a gallery in Norway, Czech artist Barbora Kysilkova seeks out and befriends the career criminal who stole them. After inviting the thief to sit for a portrait, the two form an improbable relationship and an inextricable bond that will forever link them in see-it-to-believe-it ways.
What at first began as a straightforward investigation of an art heist, The Painter and the Thief grew into a three-year-long odyssey of cinematic detective work and surprisingly emotional revelations, resulting in one of the most unpredictable, stranger-than-fiction documentaries ever made –and a conclusion you’ll never forget. Special Jury Prize for Creative Storytelling, Sundance Film Festival. (102 minutes)
“An astonishing documentary with a genius final stroke!” -Peter Debruge, Variety
