(Japan/2020—directed by Naomi Kawase)

After a long and unsuccessful struggle to get pregnant, Satoko (Hiromi Nagasaku) and her husband Kiyokazu (Arata Iura) look to adaption as the answer. Over the next six years, the middle-class couple and their young son Asato settle into a comfortable, albeit routine, daily life. But without warning, the family’s orderly existence is shattered by the sudden arrival of a young woman claiming to be Asato’s biological mother, demanding his return. Alarmed at first, Satoko grows more and more emboldened and confident in defending the integrity of her family.

Japan’s official submission as Best International Feature in this year’s Academy Awards®, True Mothers seamlessly weaves together multiple timelines and genres with elegant pacing and a keen sense of place. Ultimately creating a deeply touching celebration of a woman who’s unafraid to face the demanding duties of love, support and compassion. Official Selection, Cannes, Toronto and San Sebastian Film Festivals. In Japanese with English subtitles. (139 minutes)

"An enormously life-affirming piece of work — a wryly funny folk tale of innocence and experience."-Sean Burns, WBUR Boston Public Radio

"The latest film from prolific Japanese director Naomi Kawase is an elegant, absorbing piece of storytelling, with universal themes and a tone which conveys empathy without tipping into sentimentality." -Wendy Ide, Screen Daily
