(Japan/2020—directed by Naomi Kawase)
After a long and unsuccessful struggle to get pregnant, Satoko (Hiromi Nagasaku) and her husband Kiyokazu (Arata Iura) look to adaption as the answer. Over the next six years, the middle-class couple and their young son Asato settle into a comfortable, albeit routine, daily life. But without warning, the family’s orderly existence is shattered by the sudden arrival of a young woman claiming to be Asato’s biological mother, demanding his return. Alarmed at first, Satoko grows more and more emboldened and confident in defending the integrity of her family.
