Eisenhower Dance Detroit: Five Tangos
Join Eisenhower Dance Detroit’s Artistic Director Stephanie Pizzo, Executive Director Anne Bak Marine, company member Alex Hlavaty and film director for this live discussion and premiere screening of Five Tangos.
Composer Astor Piazolla’s Five Tango Sensations reflects on the artist’s relationship to the five emotions he experienced when faced with illness: dreaming, loving, anxiety, despair, and fear. The Eisenhower Dance Detroit dance production of Five Tangos was conceived for the stage and originally scheduled to premiere at the Detroit Film Theatre in November of 2020. As a result of the pandemic, the collaborators reimagined the choreography for film and pivoted to using four iconic metro Detroit locations selected for their ambiance and intimacy: the DFT’s Crystal Gallery, the Promenade at the Guardian Building, Meadowbrook Hall, and the Scarab Club.
In the creation of this work, the choreographic process was shaped by the necessities of the public health crisis. EDD Artistic Director Stephanie Pizzo worked with masked dancers and created the dances exclusively in duet form to capture our heightened longing for human connection through touch, breath, and togetherness felt during a year of isolation.
