Friday Night Live! Marion Hayden and Alvin Waddles perform live score for The Flying Ace
Black History Month programs are made possible by the generous support of Arn and Nancy Tellem.
In the silent era, many films made for African American audiences were less concerned with the subject of race than with making popular entertainment in the traditional Hollywood style. Filmed near Jacksonville, Florida, The Flying Ace is the story of a heroic African American fighter pilot (played by J. Lawrence Criner) returning home after World War I to resume his career as a railroad detective, but soon encountering more intrigue and adventure than he bargained for.
Independently made and distributed via the era’s black theater circuit, the wonderfully entertaining The Flying Ace has been restored and is presented with a live, original score by pianist Alvin Waddles and bassist Marion Hayden.
