(Kosovo/Switzerland/Macedonia/Albania/2021—directed by Blerta Basholli)
This searing new drama is based on the true story of Fahrije (Yllka Gashi), who, like many of the other women in her patriarchal village, has lived with fading hope and burgeoning grief since her husband disappeared during the war in Kosovo. To provide for her struggling family, Fahrije pulls the other widows in her community together to launch a business selling a local food product.
Together they find healing and solace by daring to consider a future without their husbands—but their will to begin carving out a stable, independent existence is met with hostility. The men in the village both fear and condemn Fahrije’s efforts to empower herself and the women around her, beginning a feud that threatens their newfound sovereignty as well as the financial future of their families.
Against the backdrop of civil unrest and deeply rooted misogyny, Fahrije and the women of her village will not be deterred in their struggle to find hope and justice in the face of a dangerously uncertain future. Winner of three major prizes at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival – the Audience Award, Directing Award, and the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Film – Hive is an eloquent and simply told portrait of loss and the subsequent uphill journey to freedom. In Albanian with English subtitles. (84 minutes)
“A bold, powerful testament to the agency of women everywhere, all the more compelling because it’s based on a true story. The incredibly nuanced performance of Yllka Gashi is the glue that holds it all together.” -Audrey Fox, We Live Entertainment
