Memoir of War (La Douleur)
(Belgium/France/Switzerland/2017—directed by Emmanuel Finkiel)
In this haunting adaptation of Marguerite Duras’s semi-autobiographical novel, The War: A Memoir, the famed author of Hiroshima, Mon Amour recounts an emotionally raw, complex story of love and perseverance. In Nazi-occupied France in 1944, Marguerite (an incandescent performance by Mélanie Thierry) is a Resistance member along with her husband, Robert Antelme.
When Antelme is deported by the Gestapo, Marguerite feigns a friendship with a duplicitous French collaborator in hopes of learning of her husband’s whereabouts. As the months wear on with no news of her husband’s fate, Marguerite begins the process of confronting the unimaginable, unsure of the wisdom of clinging to even the smallest shred of hope. In French with English subtitles. (125 mins.)
“Riveting and absorbing. Mélanie Thierry is utterly convincing and compelling.”-Neil Young, The Hollywood Reporter
