Michoacán to Michigan
Michoacán to Michigan is a compelling documentary that tells the story of Valeriano & Martina Fraga’s journey from Mexico (Morelia, Michoacán) to Michigan. In 1919, due to turmoil during the period of the Mexican Revolution, they left their home country to seek safety and stability in the United States. 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of their crossing.
Audio recordings (both Spanish and English) of Martina & Valeriano are used to tell their story, interspersed with interviews with their children and narration by their grand-daughter, Annemarie Valdez. The Fraga’s epic story, and the generations of their family that contributed to Detroit and Michigan communities throughout the past century, captures the true legacy of Martina and Valeriano’s brave journey. The film score was composed and performed by the renowned Mexican American singer/songwriter Tish Hinojosa.
